As young Canadians across the country struggle to find steady work and good wages, there is a group of young people living in Alberta's northern wilderness who have never had to worry about economic uncertainty. These young Canadians are long-term residents of Fort McMurray, the centre of Canada's oil sands patch, and the phrase "economic downturn" is not something that crosses their minds often.

As Wildrose MLA Guy Boutilier continues to question the ethics of municipal councillors and PC candidates Mike Allen and Don Scott's campaigning while on council, the Today has learned that Boutilier sat as mayor during his 1997 campaign. Boutilier said he had taken a leave of absence during the '97 election period, but the Today has obtained archived council agendas showing Boutilier may have chaired two council meetings as mayor during the 1997 campaign period, sitting as mayor at meetings on Feb. 11 and Feb. 25.

With one of the main drug dealers in Fort McMurray, Jeffrey Caines, being sentenced to 14-years of jailtime, some experts say that he will be replaced quickly by larger organizations. Caines admitted Friday to being the head of a major cocaine trafficking operation in Fort McMurray. Even though the Hells Angels don't have a chapter in Fort McMurray, they do have a support club in the area.
